Fitted wardrobes in Uxbridge

Uxbridge is one of the closest towns we cover and one where we do a lot of box-room conversions: the three-bedroom semi where the third bedroom has never once been used as a bedroom.

About Uxbridge

Why the joinery here is not the joinery two towns over.

Plan of a box room over the hall in Uxbridge Looking down on the third bedroom of a 1930s semi, above the hall. The room is roughly 2.1 by 2.4 metres. The stair bulkhead cuts across one corner and the door opens inward, taking most of the remaining floor. A shallow run with sliding doors along the long wall is the only arrangement that leaves the room usable. 2.4m 2.1m Stair bulkhead Shallow run, sliding doors
Plan, looking down About 2.1 by 2.4 metres, with the stair bulkhead taking a corner. A hinged door needs floor space this room has not got, so the run goes shallow and slides.

Uxbridge is a short run up the A408 from Hayes and it is a suburb of two halves. UB8 and UB10 towards Hillingdon and Cowley are dominated by interwar and post-war semis on generous plots, most of them three-bedroom with a genuinely small third room, the classic box room, usually between six and eight square metres, too small for a double bed and too useful to leave as a junk store. More of our Uxbridge work is turning those into walk-in wardrobes or fitted home offices than anywhere else we cover.

Towards Ickenham and Denham in UB9 and UB10 the houses get larger and older, with some Arts and Crafts influence and a fair number of properties backing onto the Colne Valley. Uxbridge also has a substantial student and staff population around Brunel University, which means a steady supply of houses in multiple occupation where the wardrobe requirement is per-room storage rather than one family's clothes, and that is a genuinely different design brief.

The third bedroom is the other job that comes up here again and again. In the 1930s semis it is the box room over the hall, usually about 2.1 by 2.4 metres with the stair bulkhead taking one corner, and the only way to get real hanging into it is a shallow run on sliding doors rather than anything that has to open outward into the floor space.

  • Box room dimensions, and whether the stair bulkhead takes a corner
  • Whether sliding doors are needed because there is no floor space to open into
  • Whether the house is in multiple occupation, which changes the brief entirely
  • Ceiling height in the newer properties towards the Colne Valley

The box room is the Uxbridge job

Three-bedroom semis here nearly all have one room that has never held a bed. Converted properly it becomes the most useful room in the house.

The test is 1.8m by 2m. Above that you can have bays down a long wall and the end wall with space to stand and turn. Below it, you are building a corridor, and we would rather tell you that than take the money.

Being five miles away actually matters

Not for the price, because we do not charge by distance inside our area. It matters for the small things: coming back to adjust a door that has moved, dropping a replacement handle round, getting to a snag the same week rather than the same month.

Prices are the same in Uxbridge as everywhere else we work. For the ranges, taken from jobs actually done, see what fitted wardrobes cost.

Common questions

Asked often enough to answer here.

Which parts of Uxbridge do you cover?

UB8, UB9 and UB10, taking in Uxbridge town, Hillingdon, Cowley, Ickenham, Denham and Harefield, plus Yiewsley and West Drayton on the way in. It is one of our closest areas at about five miles.

Our third bedroom is too small to use. What can be done with it?

A box room of about 1.8m by 2m will take wardrobe bays down one long wall and the end wall with room to stand and turn, which makes it a walk-in wardrobe and frees the main bedroom completely. Below that size we would suggest a fitted office or a wall of wardrobes in the main room instead, and we will say so.

Is a walk-in wardrobe going to hurt our resale value?

It can, if it is the third bedroom of a three-bed house and the change cannot be undone. We build so it can be taken out and the room returned to a bedroom, which is worth deciding before we start rather than after.

Do you work on rental and HMO properties?

Yes, and around Brunel there is a lot of it. The brief is different, durable finishes, per-room storage, lockable where needed, and it is priced the same way as any other job.

How quickly can you get out to look?

Uxbridge is twenty minutes from us, so usually within a few days and often the same week. There is no charge for the visit.

Do you do kitchens in Uxbridge?

Yes, kitchens as well as bedrooms, supplied and fitted or fitted only if you have already bought one.
