Fitted wardrobes in Croydon

Croydon covers more kinds of home than any other place on our list: Edwardian villas in Sanderstead, Victorian terraces in Thornton Heath, and more high-rise flats than the rest of our area combined.

About Croydon

Why the joinery here is not the joinery two towns over.

Plan of a Victorian bedroom in Croydon Looking down on a late-Victorian or Edwardian bedroom. A deep chimney breast projects into the room with a narrow, deep alcove either side. The window is on the outside wall and the door opens against the opposite wall. The wardrobes fill both alcoves, deep enough to hang across the recess rather than along it. 1m deep Window Chimney breast Wardrobe, hung across Wardrobe, hung across
Plan, looking down Deeper chimney breast, narrower alcoves. The recess is often deep enough to hang across rather than along, which is what makes these rooms worth the money.

Croydon is the most varied place we work, and the design changes completely street by street. Thornton Heath and Selhurst in CR7 are dense Victorian and Edwardian terrace, narrow-fronted, chimney breast and alcoves, small bedrooms. Addiscombe and Shirley in CR0 are largely interwar semi.

South Croydon, Purley and Sanderstead in CR2 and CR8 climb the hill into substantially larger Edwardian and 1930s detached houses with the room sizes and ceiling heights to take serious joinery. And central Croydon has a concentration of tower blocks and converted office buildings unlike anywhere else in our area, which brings its own constraints: a service lift that has to be booked, a loading bay with a time limit, concrete walls that need percussion drilling, and management companies that want notice before any fixing work starts.

Practically, the tower-block jobs are the ones where the delivery is harder than the fitting, and where a wardrobe has to be made in sections that will actually go into a lift.

In the Victorian and Edwardian terraces off Lower Addiscombe Road the constraint runs the other way. The staircase turns twice and the first floor landing is narrow, so anything rigid over about 2.2 metres will not physically reach the back bedroom however carefully it is angled. Carcasses for those rooms get built in the room rather than carried into it, which is worth knowing before the survey rather than after.

  • Staircase turns and landing width, which decide whether a carcass can reach the room
  • Whether the building needs a service lift booked and a loading bay slot
  • Wall construction, because concrete needs percussion drilling
  • Whether the management company wants notice before any fixing work starts

Three Croydons, three designs

The terrace. CR7 and parts of CR0. Chimney breast, alcoves, small rooms. Alcove units to the ceiling with a bridge over.

The hill. CR2 and CR8. Large Edwardian and 1930s houses, tall rooms, whole-wall runs and walk-in conversions.

The tower. Central CR0. Flat walls, concrete structure, no alcoves. Straightforward to design, and the whole job is really a logistics exercise.

Access is the Croydon variable

For flats, the questions that decide the job are asked before the design: what size is the service lift, is there a booking system, what hours does the building allow drilling, where does the van unload and for how long.

Getting those answers on the first phone call is what stops a two-day fit becoming a four-day one.

Prices are the same in Croydon as everywhere else we work. For the ranges, taken from jobs actually done, see what fitted wardrobes cost.

Common questions

Asked often enough to answer here.

Croydon is a long way from Hayes. Do you actually cover it?

Yes, but honestly: it is about twenty-two miles right across London and it takes an hour each way. We book Croydon visits in blocks rather than singly, so there may be a few days' wait for a slot. There is no travel charge.

We are in a flat on the ninth floor. Is that a problem?

Not if it is planned. Carcasses are made in sections that fit the service lift, delivery is booked into whatever window the building allows, and the management company gets notice. What causes problems is turning up with a two-and-a-half-metre carcass and finding a lift that takes two metres.

Our flat has concrete walls. Can wardrobes be fixed to them?

Yes, and concrete is the most secure wall there is to fix into. It needs percussion drilling and proper anchors, which is noisier than plasterboard, so we agree the hours with you and the building first.

Do you cover Purley and Sanderstead?

Yes, CR2 and CR8 as well as CR0 and CR7. The houses up the hill are larger and it is often where the more involved jobs are: full fitted bedrooms and walk-in wardrobes rather than a single wall.

How much do fitted wardrobes cost in Croydon?

£2,000 to £5,000 for most jobs, the same ranges as everywhere else we work. Flat jobs with difficult access occasionally sit higher because of the extra day the delivery takes.

Do you do kitchens in Croydon too?

Yes, though for kitchens especially it is worth talking early, because a kitchen fit is a week or more on site and we plan those around the travel.
