What fitted wardrobes actually cost

The national wardrobe companies will not give you a number until somebody has sat in your living room for two hours. Here is ours, before you have spoken to anybody.

Where people start

  • Every fitted wardrobe company wants an appointment before they will discuss price.
  • You have had a quote that felt like a negotiation rather than a price.
  • You cannot tell whether £4,000 for a wall of wardrobes is fair or absurd.
  • You want to know what the cheap end actually gets you.

Where they end up

  • A real range from real jobs, published before anybody visits.
  • A plain account of what takes a wardrobe from one end of it to the other.
  • No VAT on top and no finance agreement to sign.
  • One price, given once, that does not fall by a third if you hesitate.

What is behind the doors

The price is decided by the inside, not the front.

Two runs can look identical closed and differ by thousands open. Rails, drawer boxes, adjustable shelving and whether the space over the doors is used at all are what move the number.

How the job runs

Step by step, and nothing owed until step three.

  1. 01

    Place yourself in the range

Read the ranges and the list underneath. A single alcove and a full wall of sliding mirrored doors are at opposite ends, and most people know within a few minutes which they are closer to.

  2. 02

    Free home visit

    About an hour

Arshdeep measures the wall, checks how far out of true it runs and asks what is going inside. All three change the price.

  3. 03

    A written price

Given once. A 10% deposit books the dates and the balance is due on completion.

The numbers

Ranges, from jobs actually done.

A single fixed price on a bespoke job is a guess dressed up as a promise. These are the brackets ours land in.

Fully covered by public liability insurance.

What you get at each end

At the bottom of the range. A single alcove or a short wall. Painted MDF, hinged doors, a rail and shelves inside, scribed properly and taken to the ceiling. Nothing about it is cheap-looking; there is simply less of it.

In the middle. A full bedroom wall, three or four bays, a mix of hanging and drawers, decent ironmongery.

At the top. A long wall or a walk-in. Sliding or mirrored doors, a drawer bank, internal lighting, veneered rather than painted, perhaps a dressing table built into the run.

The one thing worth paying more for

The interior. Doors are what visitors see and drawers are what you use. A wardrobe with a rail and one shelf costs less and will annoy you every morning for a decade.

Spend the extra on drawers and on getting the hanging heights right for what you actually own. It is the only part of this list nobody regrets.

Common questions

Asked often enough to answer here.

What takes a wardrobe from £2,000 to £5,000?

Width first: a three-metre wall is more carcass than a one-metre alcove. Then doors, and sliding mirrored doors cost noticeably more than hinged painted ones. Then the interior, because drawers are much more work than shelves. Lighting and a fitted dressing table are what push a job to the top.

Why are the national companies so much more expensive?

Showrooms, television advertising and commission-paid salespeople all get recovered from the same job. If a quote drops by a third because you said you would think about it, that tells you what the first number was.

Is there VAT to add?

No. The company is not VAT registered, so the quoted figure is the figure.

What deposit do you take, and do you offer finance?

10% before work starts, balance on completion. We do not offer finance.

How much is just one alcove?

An alcove is the least expensive way into fitted joinery, because the recess already exists and you are paying only for the joinery that uses it. It sits at the bottom of the range above, and it is the job we would most often recommend to somebody testing the water.

Does the price include painting?

We can supply primed for your decorator or finish it ourselves; either is quoted at the visit. What is not included is making good and repainting the surrounding wall, which is usually a decorator's job anyway.

Will the price change after the measure?

The written price after the measure is the price. What can change it before that is only ever the scope: another bay, sliding rather than hinged, lighting added.

The next step

An hour, a drawing, and one price. None of it costs you anything.
