Kitchens

Fitted kitchens, measured and made for the room you actually have

Most kitchens are sold to you off a showroom floor and made to fit afterwards. We work the other way round. Arshdeep comes out, measures the room, draws what will actually go in it, and only then talks about money.

Where people start

  • You have three wildly different quotes and none of them explain what you are getting.
  • The room is an awkward shape: a chimney breast, a boxed-in soil pipe, a ceiling that drops.
  • You have been told the units are standard sizes and the gaps get filled with end panels.
  • You need to know how many days the kitchen will be out of action and nobody will say.

Where they end up

  • A kitchen drawn around your room rather than chosen off a size chart.
  • Every gap scribed and panelled properly, so nothing looks made to fit later.
  • One person responsible for the whole job. The man who measures it is the man who fits it.
  • A written price, with the ranges spelled out, before you pay anything.

How the job runs

Step by step, and nothing owed until step three.

  1. 01

    The home visit

    About an hour

Free, and no obligation. Arshdeep comes to the house, measures the room properly, looks at where the services already run, and asks what annoys you about the kitchen you have. If the honest answer is that a smaller job would serve you better, he will say so.

  2. 02

    The drawing

    Within a few days

You get a drawing of the room with the units in it, so you can see what you are buying instead of imagining it. Changes at this stage cost nothing but a conversation. Changes once the doors are on order are a different matter.

  3. 03

    The price

A written figure broken down by what it covers: units, worktop, fitting, and anything we are not doing. Nothing is added on top for VAT, because the company is not VAT registered. A 10% deposit books the dates.

  4. 04

    The fit

Typically 5 to 12 working days

Old kitchen out, new one in. Arshdeep runs one job at a time, so nobody vanishes halfway through to start somebody else's. You are told at the outset roughly how many days you will be without a working sink, and if that changes you hear it from us first.

What we work with

  • In-frame and handleless door styles
  • Painted MDF and real oak veneer
  • Quartz, granite, porcelain and solid timber worktops
  • Blum and Hettich runners and hinges
  • Brushed brass, matt black and stainless ironmongery

The guarantee

If anything goes wrong within 12 months of the job finishing, we come back and put it right. That covers the fitting and the units we supplied.

Insurance

Fully covered by public liability insurance.

Why the drawing comes before the price

A kitchen quote given over the phone is a guess about a room nobody has stood in. Arshdeep measures first because the awkward parts of a room, the boxed-in pipe, the wall that is 20mm out over three metres, the window sill sitting lower than the worktop wants to be, are exactly the parts that decide what the job costs.

Once it is drawn you can see it. Move the sink. Argue about the island. Decide the tall units are one bay too far. All of that is free while it is still lines on paper.

Where the money actually goes

Three things move the number more than anything else: the worktop, how many tall units there are, and how much making-good the room needs once the old kitchen is off the wall. Doors and handles get all the attention in showrooms and matter least to the total.

We would rather tell you that at the start than have you work it out from the invoice. If you have already bought the units and only need them fitted, the kitchen fitting costs are set out separately.

A kitchen in Reading, under a roof lantern

The photograph above is a recent job in Reading: a large open-plan room lit from directly above by a full-width roof lantern, which decided most of the design. Off-white handleless units run in an L down two walls, kept low and free of anything that would throw a shadow under the lantern. The island does three jobs at once: a marble-effect quartz worktop with waterfall ends, bar stool seating on one side, and the main run of storage underneath, so nothing eats into the wall runs either side. Glass pendant lights hang low over the seating end, a tall integrated fridge-freezer and microwave sit in the units on the right, and the whole floor is a herringbone wood-effect that keeps the room reading as one space rather than a kitchen with a dining bit stuck on.

Working across West London and out

Arshdeep is based in Hayes and works within about fifty miles of it, which covers most of West London, Middlesex, Surrey, Berkshire and Hertfordshire. There is no showroom to visit, and that is deliberate. A showroom is an overhead somebody pays for, and it is never the showroom.

Reading. Off-white handleless units run down two walls, with a marble-effect quartz island doing the work of a dining table, a breakfast bar and the main run of storage all at once. The roof lantern is why the cabinetry stays low and pale, so nothing blocks the light it is there to bring in.

Common questions

Asked often enough to answer here.

How much does a fitted kitchen cost?

Most of the kitchens we do land between £2,000 and £15,000 all in. The bottom of that is a smaller room with straightforward units. The top is a large kitchen with stone worktops and a lot of tall cabinetry. The biggest job we have taken on was £30,000, a kitchen in Elstow near Bedford. The ranges are published on the cost page because being coy about price wastes everybody's afternoon.

Do you supply the kitchen or only fit it?

Both, and either. Most people have us supply and fit the lot, because then one person is responsible when something does not line up. If you have already bought a kitchen elsewhere and want it installed properly, see the kitchen fitting page.

How long will I be without a kitchen?

Five to twelve working days for a typical job, depending on size and on what the walls and floor need once the old units come off. You get a rough number before you commit and a firm one once the room is stripped and we can see behind it.

Do you do the plumbing and the electrics?

The joinery, units, worktops and fitting are ours. Gas, and any electrical work that needs certifying, is done by a qualified trade we bring in and coordinate. You are not left ringing round for a sparky mid-job.

Is there VAT on top of your prices?

No. Signature Kitchen & Bedrooms is not VAT registered, so nothing is added to the figure you are quoted. On a job of this size that is a real difference against a VAT-registered firm.

What if I only want part of the kitchen changed?

That is fine, and it is often the sensible thing. New doors and worktops on sound carcasses, or a run of tall units added to a kitchen that otherwise works, costs a fraction of a full rip-out. Our smallest jobs start around £200.
