Fitted wardrobes in Hounslow

Hounslow bedrooms are, on average, the tightest we work in. That is why more of the wardrobes we fit here slide than hinge, and why the measuring visit matters more than usual.

About Hounslow

Why the joinery here is not the joinery two towns over.

Plan of a tight bedroom in Hounslow Looking down on a narrow interwar bedroom. The bed occupies most of the floor and leaves about 600mm between the foot of the bed and the wardrobe wall. A hinged door needs roughly 550mm of swing and would touch the bed; a sliding door needs none, which is why sliding doors outnumber hinged in this stock. 600mm Bed Sliding doors, no swing needed
Plan, looking down The gap between the bed and the wall is the whole argument. A hinged door needs about 550mm to open into; a slider needs nothing.

Hounslow is dense, and the bedrooms show it. TW3 and TW4 are largely interwar and post-war semis and terraces on plots narrower than the equivalent housing further out, so a rear bedroom here is frequently under three metres wide with the bed already close to the wardrobe wall. That is the single biggest reason sliding doors outnumber hinged ones on our Hounslow jobs: a hinged door wants 600mm of clear floor in front of it and there simply is not 600mm to give.

Isleworth and Osterley in TW7 are the exception, with larger Victorian and Edwardian houses and considerably more room to work with. The other thing that shapes work here is Heathrow. A large number of households in Hounslow work airport shifts, which means somebody is often asleep during the day, and it means many houses have had secondary or triple glazing fitted into deep reveals that a wardrobe run has to be scribed around rather than butted against.

Fixings matter more here than in most of our area. The older Isleworth and Osterley houses are solid brick with lath and plaster rather than plasterboard on dabs, so a run has to be plugged into masonry and the plaster line is rarely flat enough to trust. It is slower to fit and it holds a great deal better, and it is the main reason a survey here takes longer.

  • Whether the walls are solid brick with lath and plaster, or plasterboard on dabs
  • Reveal depth where secondary or triple glazing has been fitted
  • Whether anyone in the house works airport shifts and sleeps during the day
  • Room width in the TW3 and TW4 terraces, which is tighter than it looks

Why sliding wins here

The arithmetic is simple. A hinged wardrobe door on a 600mm-deep carcass needs another 600mm of clear floor to open. In a 2.8m-wide bedroom with a double bed in it, that floor does not exist.

Sliding doors take about 100mm of internal depth and give you back the whole swing. In Hounslow that trade is almost always worth making.

Isleworth and Osterley are a different job

TW7 has the older, larger houses: taller ceilings, wider rooms, proper alcoves. Hinged doors work there, and so does the full-height alcove treatment that suits a period house.

Same man, quite different design.

Lampton, Heston, Hanworth and Cranford

Outside the town centre, the areas around Hounslow each set a slightly different job.

Lampton, between the town centre and Osterley, is a mix of Edwardian terraces and interwar semis on quiet residential roads, and a good number have had the loft converted. The loft room takes its storage low, under the slope of the roof; the original bedrooms get alcove units either side of the chimney breast, where one survives.

Heston, north of the Great West Road, is largely 1930s semis, and many have been extended to the side or the rear. An extended back bedroom is often longer than the original plan, which makes room for a full-width run rather than a pair of alcove units.

Hanworth, in TW13 on the south side of Feltham, has more post-war housing, much of it built by the council and now privately owned. The rooms tend to be plain and square, which suits a straight wall-to-wall run of sliding doors.

Cranford sits on the Hayes side of Hounslow, by the airport, and is the closest part of the borough to our base. If you are nearer Hayes than Hounslow, the page on fitted wardrobes in Hayes covers UB3 and UB4.

The same visit can take in the living room too. We build media walls in Hounslow, and in a narrow through-lounge the depth the wall comes out into the room is the thing to get right.

Common questions

Asked often enough to answer here.

Which areas of Hounslow do you cover?

TW3, TW4, TW5 and TW7, covering Hounslow Central, Hounslow West, Lampton, Heston, Cranford, Isleworth and Osterley, plus Whitton, Feltham and Hanworth nearby. It is about five miles from Hayes down the A312.

Our bedroom is too narrow for wardrobe doors to open. What are the options?

Sliding doors, which need no clearance in front at all. They cost a little more and take about 100mm of depth off the inside, but in a narrow Hounslow bedroom the floor space you get back is worth far more than the depth you lose.

Someone in the house works nights. Can you work around that?

Yes, and we do it often here. Tell us at the visit and we will plan the noisy work, cutting, fixing, anything with a drill, into an agreed window rather than starting at eight because that is when we usually start.

We have triple glazing in a deep reveal. Does that affect the wardrobe?

It can, if the run reaches the window wall. Deep reveals need the end panel scribed into them properly rather than butted up with a filler. It is a normal part of the job here and it gets measured on the visit.

Do you fit kitchens in Hounslow too?

Yes. Hounslow kitchens are often galley-shaped for the same reason the bedrooms are narrow, and a galley done well is one of the more satisfying jobs there is.

How much do fitted wardrobes cost in Hounslow?

£2,000 to £5,000 for most jobs, with sliding doors sitting a little above hinged ones. Full ranges are on the fitted wardrobes cost page.
