About Slough
Why the joinery here is not the joinery two towns over.
Slough grew around the Trading Estate and then kept growing, and the housing reflects a town that has repeatedly needed more room out of the same plots. SL1, SL2 and SL3 are dominated by interwar and post-war semis and terraces, and a strikingly high proportion of them have been extended: rear single-storey extensions, side returns, and a great many loft conversions with rear dormers.
That matters for a wardrobe job because an extended house rarely has the room shape the original builder drew. A rear bedroom over a kitchen extension may be considerably longer than its neighbours, with a step in the ceiling where the old rear wall used to be, and that step is exactly where a wardrobe run has to be planned to stop or scribe around.
Slough also has a large proportion of multi-generational family households, so the brief is regularly more hanging and drawer capacity in a given room than the same house would need elsewhere, and more requests for wardrobes in what were originally reception rooms.
Ceiling height is the other thing to check in Slough. A good deal of the 1960s and 70s stock around Cippenham and Britwell was built to 2.3 metres rather than 2.4, which is just below the point where a standard tall unit and a cornice will both fit. It is straightforward to design around once it is known, and expensive to discover after the units are made.
- Ceiling height, because much of the 1960s and 70s stock is 2.3m rather than 2.4m
- Where the step in the ceiling falls if the house has been extended
- Total hanging and drawer capacity needed, which is usually more than the room suggests
- Whether a reception room is being turned into a bedroom

Extensions change the brief
An extended house is not the house the plans show. Ceiling steps, changed window positions, a doorway moved when the wall came out. All of it lands on the wardrobe wall.
That is the whole reason we measure before quoting rather than pricing off a room size over the phone.
Getting the most into a given wall
The three things that reliably add capacity, in order:
- Take it to the ceiling. The top metre is free storage you have already paid rent or mortgage on.
- Drawers over shelves. A shelf holds one reachable layer. A drawer holds all of it.
- Split the hanging. Double hanging in half the run doubles what that half holds.
Prices are the same in Slough as everywhere else we work. For the ranges, taken from jobs actually done, see what fitted wardrobes cost.
Common questions
Asked often enough to answer here.
Which parts of Slough do you cover?
SL1, SL2 and SL3, which takes in Slough town, Cippenham, Chalvey and Langley, plus Burnham, Datchet, Iver and Farnham Royal nearby. It is about ten miles from Hayes, twenty minutes on the M4.
Our bedroom is over an extension and the ceiling has a step in it. Can wardrobes work?
Yes, and it is common in Slough. The step is usually where the original rear wall was. A run can either stop cleanly at it, or continue under the lower section with a shallower carcass. Which is better depends on where the bed sits, and it is a five-minute decision on the visit.
We need as much storage as physically possible. What is the best use of the room?
Full height, wall to wall, with the top metre as a top box for the things you touch twice a year. Then drawers rather than shelves for everything except jumpers. That combination reliably holds a third more than the same wall with a standard-height wardrobe on it.
Can you fit wardrobes in a downstairs room?
Yes, and we are asked more often in Slough than anywhere else. A reception room used as a bedroom usually has a chimney breast and a bay, so the design ends up looking a lot like an alcove job.
Is there a travel charge to Slough?
No. Slough is comfortably inside our working area and there is no distance charge anywhere within it.
Do you do kitchens in Slough?
Yes. Extended Slough kitchens are often long and narrow after a side return, which is a shape that rewards a proper drawing before anything is ordered.
